Chandigarh has an advantage almost no other Indian city has. You can leave after breakfast on a Saturday and be sitting in a deodar forest with a cup of tea by lunch. The hills start about an hour out and keep going.

The problem is that most “weekend getaway” lists ignore how long the drive really takes. They will put a seven-hour destination on a two-day list and leave you spending your entire weekend in a car. So we ranked these purely by realistic driving time from central Chandigarh, and we have been honest about which ones do not fit.

1. Morni Hills — 1 hr 30 min

The only hill station in Haryana, and the closest real escape from the city. Morni sits at around 1,200 metres with two small lakes at Tikkar Taal and a fort at the top.

It is modest, and that is the point. You can leave at nine, be walking a forest trail by eleven, and be home for dinner. For anyone searching for a one day trip from Chandigarh, this is the answer. Go between October and March; it is hot and unremarkable in summer.

Practical note: the final approach is a narrow single-lane road with tight bends. Perfectly manageable, but not the place to learn hill driving.

2. Kasauli — 1 hr 45 min

A colonial cantonment town of pine, quiet lanes and Sunset Point, still small enough that it has not been ruined. Kasauli is the classic short weekend getaway from Chandigarh and consistently the most requested romantic place near Chandigarh among couples we plan for.

There is very little to “do” here, which is exactly why people return. Walk the Upper and Lower Mall, visit Christ Church, watch the sun go down over the plains, eat well, sleep early.

Practical note: Kasauli has limited good accommodation and it books out weeks ahead for weekends and holidays. Decide early or go on a weekday.

3. Solan and Barog — 2 hrs

Solan is a working town rather than a resort, which keeps it affordable and uncrowded. Barog, a few kilometres away, is the prettier base — a small station on the Kalka–Shimla narrow gauge line, surrounded by deodar.

This pairing works beautifully as a first hill trip with older parents or young children, because the drive is short, the gradient is gentle and there is nothing strenuous involved. The Shoolini Mata temple, the mushroom research station and the Barog tunnel walk fill a comfortable weekend.

4. Chail — 3 hrs

Chail is what Shimla was before Shimla became Shimla. Dense forest, a palace built by the Maharaja of Patiala, and the highest cricket ground in the world at 2,444 metres.

Three hours is the sweet spot for a two-night trip. You arrive with the afternoon intact and you are far enough from the highway that it gets genuinely dark and quiet at night. The wildlife sanctuary here is worth an early morning.

Practical note: combine Chail with Kufri and Shimla on the return leg rather than as a separate trip. The roads connect naturally.

5. Shimla and Naldehra — 3 hrs 30 min

Shimla needs no introduction, and that is both its strength and its weakness. The Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhoo Temple and the toy train are all genuinely worth seeing; the crowds on a summer weekend are genuinely difficult.

Our suggestion is to base yourself at Naldehra, about 22 km beyond Shimla, where there is a century-old golf course laid out among cedars and a fraction of the noise. Drive into Shimla for a day, then retreat.

6. Renuka Ji and Nahan — 4 hrs

The offbeat pick on this list. Renuka Lake in Sirmaur district is the largest natural lake in Himachal, shaped, as local belief holds, like a reclining woman. There is a small wildlife sanctuary alongside it and a temple complex that fills up during the Renuka Fair in November.

Almost nobody from Chandigarh goes here, which is the entire recommendation. Pair it with Nahan, a tidy hill town with old stepwells and a relaxed pace. Best from October to March.

7. Narkanda and Thanedar — 5 hrs

This is our home ground — our office sits in Kumarsain, just below Narkanda — so we will declare the bias upfront and then tell you why it earns its place.

Narkanda sits at 2,700 metres on the road towards Kinnaur, with the Hatu Peak temple above it and, in winter, one of the oldest ski slopes in India. Thanedar, a little further on, is where commercial apple farming in India began, planted by Samuel Stokes in the early 1900s. The orchards run down the hillsides in every direction.

Go in September or October and you are driving through harvest, with fruit stacked at the roadside and the whole valley smelling of apples. Go in January and you get snow with a fraction of the Shimla crowd.

Practical note: the last stretch beyond Kufri is winding. Five hours is realistic, not pessimistic.

8. Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj — 5 hrs 45 min

The furthest genuinely comfortable weekend from Chandigarh, and the most different in character. McLeod Ganj is the seat of the Tibetan government in exile, with the Dalai Lama’s temple complex, Namgyal Monastery, Bhagsu waterfall and the Triund trailhead all within reach.

Two nights minimum here, and three is better — arriving Friday evening and leaving Sunday morning wastes the drive. The Dharamshala cricket stadium against the Dhauladhar backdrop is worth the detour even if you do not follow the game.

9. Bir Billing — around 6 hrs

Right on the line, and worth it. Billing is one of the best paragliding sites in the world and has hosted the Paragliding World Cup. Bir, the village below, has grown into a comfortable base of cafes, monasteries and slow days.

Flying season runs roughly March to June and again from September to November. Even if you never leave the ground, the Tibetan colony and the tea gardens around Palampur make the drive worthwhile.

Why these times do not match your maps app

Your phone will quote Dharamshala at four and a half hours. We have written five forty-five. Neither figure is wrong; they measure different things.

• Maps assumes you never stop. One tea break and one meal adds 45 to 60 minutes to any of these drives.
• It underestimates leaving Chandigarh. Getting clear of Zirakpur or Kharar on a Saturday morning can take 30 minutes on its own.
• It does not know about the Sunday evening return. Between roughly 4 and 8 PM on Sunday, every road back into Chandigarh slows considerably. Leave the hills by 2 PM or plan to eat dinner on the way.
• Hill roads punish averages. One slow truck on a single-lane climb costs you fifteen minutes and there is nothing you can do about it.

Three that just miss the six-hour line

Included honestly, because they appear on almost every list of this kind and they do not belong there:

• Manali — around 7 hours. Genuinely improved since the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane opened, but still too far for two days. Practical notes before you set off

• Non-Himachal vehicles pay an entry toll at the state border, and some towns add a local green tax. Keep small change and your RC handy.
• Indian citizens need no permits for any destination on this list. Permit requirements start much further out, in Lahaul and beyond.
• Fuel up in Chandigarh or at the first major town. Pumps become sparse past Solan on the Narkanda route.
• Book accommodation before you leave for Kasauli, Chail and McLeod Ganj. Walk-ins work in Solan and Nahan; they do not work in Kasauli on a Saturday.
