Manali Sightseeing – Rohtang Pass, Atal Tunnel, Solang and Shinku La Compared
Quick Answer
Pick Solang Valley for easy adventure and snow (about 14 km from Manali, no permit), the Atal Tunnel for Lahaul scenery and a Sissu day trip, Rohtang Pass for classic high-pass snow in season (online permit, ₹550 per vehicle), and Shinku La for a remote 5,000 m pass with a long, demanding drive. Families and first-timers do best with Solang plus the tunnel. Always check road status on the morning you travel.
Ask ten people what to see around Manali and you will hear the same four names: Rohtang, Solang, the Atal Tunnel and Shinku La. They all sit along the same road north, so many travellers assume they are interchangeable. They are not. Each one differs in altitude, effort, rules and the kind of day it gives you.
This guide compares them honestly, so you can choose the right ones for your dates, your group and your energy levels. Discover the best of Manali with a local sightseeing tour covering famous attractions, beautiful landscapes, temples, and vibrant local markets.

Rohtang Pass: the classic snow-and-views day
Rohtang sits about 51 km from Manali at roughly 3,978 m (13,050 ft). It is the one most people picture: a wide, high pass with snow lingering into summer and big views across the Pir Panjal range. The catch is that access is tightly regulated. Under National Green Tribunal orders, only 1,200 vehicles a day (800 petrol, 400 diesel) are allowed beyond Gulaba, and each needs an online tourism permit from rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in.
The fee is ₹550 per vehicle (₹500 permit plus a ₹50 congestion charge), not per person, so a full car pays the same as a couple. A permit is tied to one vehicle and one date, and weekends and peak weeks sell out early.
Season matters. The pass usually reopens around mid-May (in 2026 it opened that month) and stays drivable until heavy snow closes it in late November. In winter it is closed to tourists, so do not build a December trip around it. The road has also traditionally been shut to tourist traffic on Tuesdays for maintenance, and landslides or weather can close it with no notice. A valid permit does not help on those days.
Best for: first-timers who want that summer-snow photo and can give it a full day. Think twice if: you have breathing problems, travel with infants, or have no flexibility in your dates. The altitude gain is steep, so spend a night in Manali first.
Atal Tunnel and Sissu – Lahaul scenery without the pass
The Atal Tunnel is a 9.02 km highway tunnel opened in 2020, and it is the longest highway tunnel in the world above 3,000 m. It links Solang Valley to Sissu in Lahaul and cut roughly 46 km from the old route over Rohtang. The drive through takes about 15 minutes.
Here is what travellers often get wrong: driving through the tunnel is not the same as visiting Rohtang. The tunnel runs beneath the range and bypasses the pass completely. What you are really visiting is the Lahaul side, with the Chandra river valley and Sissu village, and a dry, open mountain landscape that feels nothing like green Manali.
There is no Rohtang-style permit, which makes this a flexible plan. The trade-offs are traffic, since queues build near the portals on holidays and after snowfall, and weather. After heavy snow in January 2026, authorities asked tourists to leave the tunnel area when roads turned slippery, so check conditions first.
Best for: families, seniors and anyone who wants Lahaul views without much altitude stress. It is also the dependable choice when Rohtang is closed.
Solang Valley – the easy, activity-packed option
Solang is around 14 km from Manali at about 2,500 m, so it is the most accessible of the four. There is no permit and little altitude concern. In warmer months it is the base for paragliding, zorbing, ropeway rides, ATV rides and horse riding. When snow is on the ground, it offers snow play and skiing.
It fits into half a day and pairs well with the Atal Tunnel on the same trip. The downsides are crowds in peak season, touts, and activity rates that vary between operators, so agree prices before you start. In heavy snow, vehicles beyond the valley may be limited to 4×4, as happened in January 2026.
Best for: families with kids, couples, first-timers and winter visitors. Go early, because afternoon crowds build and mountain weather can turn after midday.
Shinku La – the remote, high-altitude adventure
Shinku La is a different level of trip. At around 5,000 m (published figures range from about 5,050 m to 16,580 ft), it sits on the Darcha–Padum road into Zanskar. Darcha is about 101 km from Manali and the pass is roughly another 40 km beyond, so expect around 140–150 km each way and more than five hours of driving in one direction.
The reward is scale and solitude: snow even in summer, bare glaciated peaks and far fewer people than Rohtang. As of 2026, domestic tourists do not need a permit, but confirm locally because road conditions decide everything. Earlier in 2026 there were spells when only 4×4 vehicles were allowed.
A same-day return from Manali is possible in good conditions with a very early start and an experienced driver, but it is long and tiring. A night at Jispa or Darcha makes it far more comfortable and helps with acclimatisation. A 4.1 km Shinku La tunnel is under construction (work began in 2025 on a roughly four-year timeline), so this route will change in coming years.
Best for: confident travellers, photographers and road-trippers. Not recommended for: young children, seniors, or anyone with heart or lung conditions.
Which one should you choose?
- Travelling with kids or parents: Solang plus the Atal Tunnel and Sissu.
- First trip, May to October: Solang one day, Rohtang another, if your permit is confirmed.
- Winter (December to March): Solang and the tunnel side. Rohtang is closed.
- Want solitude and big landscapes: Shinku La, ideally with a night in Jispa.
A sample 3-night Manali plan
Do the easy day first and the high-altitude day second, so your body has two nights to adjust.
- Day 1: Arrive, rest, then Hadimba Temple and Old Manali.
- Day 2: Solang Valley in the morning, then the Atal Tunnel and Sissu.
- Day 3: Rohtang Pass with a confirmed permit (or Shinku La in season).
- Day 4: Breakfast, shopping on Mall Road, and departure.
Practical tips that save your trip
- Check status that morning. Road and permit rules change with weather and administration orders.
- Start by 6:30–7:00 am. Roads are clearer and the weather is usually better.
- Pack for cold. Carry layers, gloves, water, snacks and motion-sickness tablets, even in summer.
- Respect altitude. Headache, nausea or breathlessness means you should descend, not push on.
- Avoid weekends and holidays for Rohtang and the tunnel if you can.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for Rohtang Pass in 2026?
Yes, every vehicle going up needs an online permit from rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in. The fee is ₹550 per vehicle, with a daily cap of 1,200 vehicles. The Atal Tunnel and Solang do not need one.
Is the Atal Tunnel the same as Rohtang Pass?
No. The tunnel passes under the mountain and bypasses Rohtang entirely. It takes you to Sissu in Lahaul, not to the pass top.
Is Rohtang Pass open in winter?
No. It normally closes to tourists around late November and reopens in mid-May. In winter, visit Solang Valley and the tunnel side, subject to snow and road status.
Can I visit Shinku La from Manali in one day?
Yes, in good conditions, but it is about 140–150 km each way at high altitude. An overnight stay at Jispa or Darcha is easier and safer for most travellers.
